Did you know what kahuna means? It’s the informal way of calling an important and wise person or one that’s in charge in Hawaiian; it also means a very large wave as in surfing… This is why I use this terminology for the ever-so-famous, with the ever-so-gigantic name in radio, John M.
When you’re down and troubled and you need a helping hand, don’t fail to lock it into the Afternoon Drive because if there’s someone that’s a witty entertainer, a comedian and an artiste to keep you company, it’s the passionate big kahuna himself!
Nattering with John in the booth is my favorite pastime when I need a break from all the brainstorming and work at the Y101 studios because, in keeping with his Hawaiian pseudonym, you don’t just have a sage and important broadcast pioneer in him, but as James Taylor would say, you’ve got a friend.
“No bubblegumish sounds for me” says John and continues to creatively comment that “a good female voice holds the beast in you that says: I’m not going to bed with you tonight” so yup, that’s right – a sweet, distinctive and controlling voice that tells you something is what this popular DJ looks for in female artists!
When asked his top 10 female singers, he didn’t site Madonna, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande or any of the most popular divas. His faves happen to be Sade, Carly Simon, the American rock singer Aimee Mann, Kim Carnes, the late Aaliyah, the singer, model, producer and actress Mary Jane Blige, Liz Phair, Michelle Branch, Chrissie Hynde (best known as the founding member of The Pretenders) and the English musician Florence Welch, lead vocalist of the now trending indie rock band Florence + The Machine, presently at Number 2on our WT20 countdown.
Definitely no common choice of artists here, so expect some of these classic female voices off-playlist on John’s Top of the Hour every afternoon from 2 to 6 on Mondays through Thursdays, and on Friday’s Gold Rush!
