When you hear tracks from AC/DC thump you with Highway To Hell, Joe Satriani rock you with Surfing With The Alien, Van Halen shake you with Panama or Steely Dan sway you with Hey Nineteen just to name a few of his choice cuts, you know you’re just about to ride out your next 4 hours with a true rocker parked behind that board. Kicking off the Top of the Hour every weekday at 2 PM, there’s really no need to introduce him, and there’s really nothing left to be told about his personality – it can’t be anyone else but our unsurpassed rocking DJ John M on the wheel for Afternoon Drive!
Yet amazingly, what he tells me is that he tends to be partial to mid-tempo programming on our CHR playlist since his slot is directed to his afternoon listeners. “People don’t want to hear all that blabbering on radio in their offices, while they’re chilling at home or when they’re on the road off to do errands” and that’s exactly what I would think midafternoons would want to bring – outright entertaining music!
Except for the traffic news, he keeps it nice and simple. Less talk and more music has always been his motto and that’s exactly the technique this smooth operator uses to sweep his fans off their feet! And John M has the most amazing talent to bring you just that – a skill he’s had since back in the days. I remember the gazillions of times he’d write this on the whiteboard in huge print during our on-air staff meetings – and he categorically meant it! That’s the way he was taught and that’s the way he taught us. A true believer of suave delivery on-air, he implanted this on our minds.
When asked what he thought of Y101 today, he replied that we presently have a great playlist, a good sound and a tight team of DJs, old and new. And once again he stressed his favorite piece Ship To Wreck, his pick of the week.
Lastly, he asked me to make sure I extended a big thank you to all those likes he received on Facebook a couple of weeks back and the touching comments people had written about him on my last article featuring Afternoon Drive. A nice ending remark from the big anchor of Y101 Always First…
