adele-weekend-top-20

With the whoopla Adele’s been getting for When We Were Young, it’s a given she’ll retain the Number 1 spot for weeks to come!

On the previous countdown when Adele’s soul ballad took over Justin Bieber’s dancehall-pop track Sorry, it was no revelation that she’d be making it to the top with all the propaganda and buzz she’s been receiving in the entertainment world. After her four year absence when she hid from the world because she didn’t believe in herself, her triumphant comeback in the music industry resulted in the limelight of all artists.

Her make-up album, 25 only confirms her definitive reinstatement in show-biz as she takes her glare of publicity seriously. After having released track after track in keeping with the momentum of being in the alp, she has accomplished the stature of being one of the only artists who have sold over 5 million albums in a single year!

“Will Adele’s historic sales performance mark a turning point for the music industry?” is the million (or should I say billion) dollar question thrown to us by Neilson Music and indeed, it is quite a debate in itself! Since 2005, there have only been 11 albums released to hit that volume in total sales of which five were Adele’s and Taylor Swift’s. Amazing!

But going back to today’s countdown, Adele’s rebirth is the conclusive winner to her career and with her favorite track When We Were Young, she has impressed numerous knockers in “elevating maudlin sentiment into high art” as quoted by music critic Pitchfork when he named it the Best New Track. Certainly the ultimate exultation to usher this year’s WT20, as Cebu votes her in as the best!

In the meantime, we continue to have Justin Bieber’s Sorry at Number 2 as a non-mover. However at Number 3, we have an incredible 9 point jump for One Direction’s History which only debuted the charts last week. The song is the 13th track from their fifth studio album Made In The A.M. and the fifth release after the lead single Drag Me Down, followed by Perfect and the two promotional singles Infinity and What A Feeling. Already making waves and a possible frontrunner, this kinda blue-eyed soul, kinda pop, kinda country track is coming in strong in these islands!

At Number 4 we have Ellie Goulding’s track Something In The Way You Move dropping down a notch while Lunchmoney Lewis Featuring Chloe AngelidesWhip It remains at Number 5 this week.

I’d like to highlight a possible powerhouse by the British musician Sigala who is a tropical house DJ and producer from Norfolk. An interpolation of the Jackson 5’s song ABC, his debut single, Easy Love is coming in pretty strong at Number 7. It was released last September 4 and shot up to Number 1 in the UK Singles Chart and UK Dance Chart. Let’s see how it takes off here in the East!

Up 2 spots is 1975’s Love Me, while Maroon 5, Ariana Grande and Adele’s Hello are slowly but surely heading southbound. Another Biebs track is on the rise debuting at Number 15 so watch out for Love Yourself.

Lots more happening at the Weekly Top 20 as its host, Mike Solo and producer of the radio show Mike O continue to mold Cebu’s music guide for you. Until next week, this has been it for the upshot of today’s countdown right here at Y101 Always First
