The 2012 London Olympics Closing Ceremony was a historically mammoth event also known as A Symphony of British Music that featured the music of several British legends and a surprise reunion from the Spice Girls!

The closing ceremony of the London2012SummerOlympics, also known as A Symphony of British Music, was held exactly fours years ago today in the Olympic Stadium, London. The closing ceremony was created collectively by famous British composers, directors, choreographers, and stage designers.

The main part of the evening featured a one-hour symphony of British Music as a number of British Pop acts appeared. Tributes to JohnLennon and FreddieMercury and the fashion industry were included in the section. There were music by George Michael, David Bowie, The Who, and Oasis. But one of the best highlights was probably the reunion of Scary Spice, Sporty Spice, Baby Spice, Ginger Spice, and Posh Spice.

Nineties girl band the SpiceGirls have each forged successful solo careers, but during London’s biggest event in years, they reform, albeit reluctantly at first, for the first time since 2008.

Before their performance that night, Jessie J, Tinie Tempah, and Taio Cruz covered the Bee GeesYou Should Be Dancing.  Then immediately right after, a number of black cabs entered the stadium, five of which lit up with LED lights, each decorated with the Spice Girls' individual trademark emblems, (Posh: sparkling black, Sporty: go-faster stripes, Scary: leopard print, Baby: pink and Ginger: The Union Flag).

The Spice Girls emerged from the cabs and performed Wannabe and SpiceUpYourLife. Halfway through their performance, they ascended onto the roofs of the cabs and proceeded to race around the stadium whilst singing and dancing from the roofs.

The five singers, GeriHalliwell (Ginger Spice), EmmaBunton (Baby Spice), MelanieChisholm (Sporty Spice), MelanieBrown (Scary Spice) and VictoriaBeckham (Posh Spice), were said to be reluctant to appear at first, feeling that the event was being staged at minimal cost, before their manager SimonFuller persuaded them to perform. They rehearsed for a week and a half and was determined not to let their large fan base down.

Mel B admitted that they were terrified at first, especially at how technically dangerous their act was going to be, climbing up the running taxi cabs and all, but she was happy at the end result. ‘There was a huge roar as we entered the Olympic stadium, and that gave us an extra boost of adrenaline. We’re not known for being particularly slick. In fact, shambolic is more like it. But it went perfectly.”
