Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars Give 70’s Band

Last year on May 1 2015, funky DJ Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars gave The Gap Band a writing credit on their huge hit, Uptown Funk.

It is no secret that Mark Ronson samples music. He even did a TED talk about it. He said that music is built upon borrowing other music and he explains why it’s a good thing very profoundly. You can check that episode here.

A year later after that talk, Ronson collaborated with Bruno Mars to create a very funky hit which they called Uptown Funk. It was a smash! It was catchy. It took six songwriters to write it and they all got credited. However, they never actually acknowledged a 70s funk band called The Gap Band with creating the sweet hook.

Uptown funk you up, uptown funk you up..” totally wasn’t invented by Mark Ronson’s genius but rather crated by Ronson in his old records. The hook was borrowed from The Gap Band’s 1979 funk song Oops Upside Your Head.

Although it was obvious that Uptown Funk drew heavy inspiration from the Minneapolis Sound era of funk music, and that Ronson and Bruno were probaby honoring the 1979 song, it ended up feeling like robbery and the Copyright issues sparked. However on this day last year, Ronson and Mars gave the three core members of The Gap Band songwriting credits as part of a mutually settled agreement.

When that was settled, a Sebian pop star named Victorija has also argued that Mark Ronson stole from her as well. She said that Ronson and the guys infringed her song Ulice Mracne Nisu Za Devojke and used the cool parts in Uptown Funk.
