When I look back to the magnificent 80s, 90s and early 2000s, what comes to mind is the music of Friday Gold Rush

It’s only here at Y101 that we can reminisce those awesome years when life was so rudimentary without today’s escalating, fast-paced technology, when music and radio were definitive entertainment and when our brains weren’t fried from information overload!

I remember the monumental tracks that the 80s brought us – Hall & Oates Kiss On My List still gives me goosebumps and my “epic-est” mantra by Donald Fagen, I.G.Y. (What A Beautiful World) sends shivers down my spine whenever I hear it! How can one ever forget those blockbusting masterpieces, the driving forces that made the 80s so 80s?

But today I’ll be talking about the rocking 90s – those headbanging tracks that made the 90s my favorite music era. I’m not saying that rock was the only genre that kicked ass then, because in effect, the 90s upheld the teen pop and dance-pop that was introduced as far back as the 70s. These were the golden years of hip hop as well, over and beyond the bushels of rap, reggae, R&B and urban music which lingered progressively throughout that decade. We witnessed the birth of electronic music with EDM’s sub-genres like trance, drum and bass, happy hardcore and intelligent dance that rose to international success coming from the 80s house and techno. Eurodance and Europop were thriving too and the contemporary country genre sustained its 80s popularity.

But my absolute optimum was the music that emerged and in my opinion, dominated the 90s scene – I’m talking about alternative, grunge, Indie rock, ska, punk rock, nu metal, heavy metal, pop rock and hard rock among others, which made the 90s the conclusive 90s! Unlike the new wave and glam-metal of the 80s which incidentally I loved as well (Van Halen and The Cult being my utmost troopers), rock conquered the 90s arena!

Among my preferred artists stand Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Metallica, Stone Temple Pilots, Guns N’ Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, R.E.M., Radiohead and so forth. In spite of my SOPs like Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones and U2 among the many artists that continued to coin rock classics, I absolutely loved these newbies and their dynamic tracks. However, I would say that the “best-est” of my faves continues to be Dishwalla – they bring back memories of my heydays in radio, in particular their only hit then Counting Blue Cars from their 1995 album Pet Your Friends.

Yes, it’s categorically a #fbf on Y101 when you go back to those amazing years and hark back to the time capsule that contains the cache of countless memories these excellent #fbf Gold Rush shows offer, so continue to lock it in with us on Fridays!
