Ed Sheeran Sued (Again) for Allegedly Copying Song

Ed Sheeran Sued for Copying Song

Heirs of Ed Townsend, who co-wrote the 1973 hit Let’s Get it On by Marvin Gaye, claim similarities with British pop singer's Thinking Out Loud.

The Townsend family claims that Sheeran's Grammy-winning song Thinking Out Loud uses harmonic progressions, and melodic and rhythmic elements central to Marvin Gaye’s number one hit Let's Get It On.

The lawsuit claims that Sheeran copied the “heart” of Let’s Get it On and repeated it continually throughout Thinking Out Loud. "The melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic compositions of 'Thinking' are substantially and/or strikingly similar to the drum composition of 'Let's.'"

The Townsends' lawsuit comes just months after songwriters Martin Harrington and Thomas Leonard sued Sheeran for $20 million for copying their song too. The pair claimed Sheeran's Photograph had "verbatim note-for-note" similarities to their song, Amazing, recorded by X Factor winner Matt Cardle in 2012.
