Jimmy Kimmel’s Oscars 2017 Opening Monologue

First time Oscar host, Kimmel, comes out comfortable, funny, and political.

Jimmy Kimmel hosted the Oscars 2017 for the first time. He started his opening monologue by throwing some some sort of failed mic throw between him and Justin Timberlake and probably the first ever N*SYNC joke ever at the Oscars.

"I really hope the other guys from NSYNC were watching that performance, because if they were, I think there's a really good chance they're going to let you back in the band," Kimmel said to JT.

Kimmel also joked that the Oscars was being shown in more than 225 countries “that now hate us”. He also made a jab at Braveheart director Mel Gibson, saying he “isn’t the man to unite us right now” before claiming he has been studying Scientology.

The first proper political joke of the Oscars 2017 was: “I want to say thank you to president Trump. I mean remember this time last year when it seemed that the Oscars were racist?”. This was a reference to the fact that the Oscars last year was criticised as #OscarsSoWhite

That joke was then followed by some rather tired jokes about La La Land director Damien Chazelle’s age (he’s young – hilarious), Amazon, and how depressing Manchester by the Sea is and the Moonlight beach scene.

The best joke of the night was probably about Meryl Streep being called “overrated” by President Donald Trump which led to a massive round of applause. Jimmy Kimmel said that “Meryl Streep has phoned it in for over 50 films”. He then asked her to stand up for another round of “underserved round of applause” which led to a standing ovation.
