“Malibu” by Miley Cyrus

  • “Malibu” is about Miley getting back together with her fiancé Liam Hemsworth after their breakup in 2013. Hemsworth has previously been the subject matter of Miley’s music; he was the inspiration behind her hit song “Wrecking Ball.”
  • What's the significance of Malibu, California in the song, you ask? Well, Malibu is a surfing town north of Los Angeles. Miley and Liam Hemsworth own a $2.5 million dollar house in there.
  • Miley wrote Malibu while inside an uber on her way to the set of ‘The Voice’. In an interview with Billboard, she explained, “I drive myself everywhere, but that day I decided to Uber, and I was trying not to sing out loud because someone else was in the car.”

“Crying in the Club” by Camila Cabello

  • “Crying in the Club” is the debut single from 20-year old Cuban singer Camila Cabello. The song is a fiery anthem about uplifting yourself after a downfall. According to Cabello, the lyrics of the song (which is about music lifting you up) reflect how she felt during the process of making her first debut album.
  • According to Cabello, “A club is usually place for celebrating. Not for being upset.” Therefore, the motto of the song is something that Cabello, or the person going through the breakup, should tell themselves so that they can enjoy the present moment.

“Swish Swish” by Katy Perry ft. Nicki Minaj

  • “Swish Swish”  is a self-empowerment anthem that calls out haters. Perry mentioned that this song is about escaping pointless negativity. The central hook uses the image of a basketball player consistently scoring points, imitating the ‘swish’ sound of the hoop’s net.
  • Fans speculated the song to be a response to Taylor Swift’s 2014 hit “Bad Blood,” which was a diss track at Katy Perry. The singer later did confirm the song to be about Swift, saying “She started it and it’s time for her to finish it.”
