Spider-man is web-slinging out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony and Marvel Studios, who have previously worked together to create the last two Spider-man films with Tom Holland have not come to terms in negotiations for futute rights of the character. So Sony will be taking back Peter Parker and Marvel Studios will no longer be able to use the webslinger in films like Captain America: Civil War or Avengers: Endgame.

Negotiations had been under way for some months between Sony and Disney. Sony has said that they were disappointed by Disney’s demand for a greater stake in the Spider-man films and by Disney proposal to tone down Marvel president, Kevin Feige’s, involvement in the productions.

Feige has been credited for the widely recognized and awarded Avengers series starting with the release of Ironman in 2008. Black Panther became the first superhero film to win a best picture Oscar nomination in 2018; last month, Avengers: Endgame overtook Avatar as the highest-grossing film of all time. Overall, Feige’s films have taken nearly $27 billion.

Earlier this week, the latest in the Spider-Man series, Far From Home, deposed Skyfall as Sony’s biggest film ever at the global box office.
