Selena Gomez Banned in China

A photo from two years ago forced Selena Gomez to cancel her shows in China.

The 23-year old singer is set to kick off her world-wide Revival Tour in May. She is due to perform in Manila, Philippines at the Mall of Asia Arena. The singer was also due to perform in Guangzhou and Shanghai in August, but those Chinese concert dates no longer appear on her website.

According to a Chinese entertainment website, the concert dates were cancelled because of a two year old photo of Gomez and the Dalai Lama. The spiritual Tibetan leader fled to India in exile after a failed uprising against the Chinese government in 1959.

In 2012, Gomez posted a picture of her meeting the religious leader during a We Day (youth empowerment event) in Toronto.

Gomez has not yet commented on the reported ban.

There are also a few musicians who have been banned in China for associating with the Dalai Lama. Just last year, Maroon 5 concert in Shanghai was cancelled because keyboardist and guitarist Jesse Carmichael was seen attending a star-studded birthday event for the Dalai Lama. Bon Jovi and Linkin Park were also banned for being seen photographed with the spiritual leader.

It is not the first time that the Gomez was banned in a country. In 2013, the pop star was denied visa request from Russia because apparently the government was afraid she would speak out against the country’s anti-gay laws.
