hodor game of thrones

Last Monday, episode 5 of Game of Thrones was released and it was one of the most heart-wrenching episodes fans experienced. This article contains spoilers.

The Door is the title of Season 6’s fifth episode of the critically successful fantasy series Game of Thrones. Fans who watched the episode had their Mondays turned around when they witnessed one of the most tragic deaths in GoT history. There were many revealing elements in the episode but nothing was more jaw-dropping and heart-breaking when we finally got to know the origins of why the gentle and beloved Hodor could only be able to say the word “Hodor

For those people who don’t why this was a big deal, this is what happened. The mysterious origin as to how Hodor got his name or why he can only say “Hodor” has been a subject of intense discussion since Season 1 back in 2011. The backstory was finally revealed in the latest episode. Bran was time travelling in the past to watch his young father in training. Also in the past was a big gentle boy named Wylis whom Bran recognizes as Hodor. Wylis was a normal child who was able to talk. In the present, Bran is in a catatonic state because he is warging in the past. While Bran is enjoying his stay in the past, his stay in the present is in danger. A hoard of White Walkers led by the Night King close in on the cave Bran, Hodor, and Meera Reed were hiding. Meera struggled to wake the catatonic crippled Bran and asked Hodor to help her carry Bran as they run out of the cave through a door. Calling out for help, Meera was able to echo her voice in the past and Bran hears her cries for help. Bran couldn’t wake up so he lets Wylis’ mind warg into Hodor’s body. As the hoard of White Walkers come near them, Hodor shuts a door behind them. Hodor sacrifices himself as Meera takes Bran and runs away to take him to safety. As Meera runs away, she commands Hodor to hold the door in the most heartbreaking scene in television history.

Fans are in mourning and they show how emotionally wrecked they were by bidding farewell to Hodor through memes. Trending this week are the hashtags #GameofThrones #Hodor and of course the recently surprising heartbreaking phrase ever created in pop culture #HoldtheDoor. Hodor and Hold the Door posts flooded Facebook and Twitter showing empathy and sorrow in their lost (much to the confusion of non-Game of Thrones fans)

Here are some of the saddest (and sometimes funny) memes out there:
