If you thought Cebu was all about luxury beaches and hotels then this article will prove you wrong.

There is an underwater cave in Lapu-Lapu called the Pawod cave. What makes this underwater cave unique is that it is the only freshwater underwater cave located in a city—you do not have to spend hours in a bus and hey, you  get to spend less!

The Pawod Cave is located near hotels and dive shops in Mactan making it very accessible to anyone. The person who discovered this cave was the late Dr. Alfonso Boy Amores, a cave diver certified in the underwater cave systems of North Central Florida, at 2001. Amores wrote a project proposal that the cave be protected before being destroyed by the city’s expansion and development.

A lot of Filipino underwater cave divers benefit from the cave since it is used for underwater cave diving training. Because of the Pawod Cave, Filipinos do not have to spend a lot of money to go abroad and train for underwater cave diving.

Remember: Underwater cave diving is a dangerous activity. Do not attempt unless you are trained for this. Going out alive after the dive is not always an assurance so we don’t recommend people exploring the cave unless they are trained.

We hope that the Pawod Cave will be preserved. For now, the city’s progress is what we have to look out for in terms of keeping this cave the way it is.

Discover. Seek. Learn. Enjoy! Cebu’s Best.
