Selena Gomez got quite a run for her fame with her very insubstantial track Good For You as it made its way to the Number 1 spot on last week’s Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 countdown.
Released last June 22, this second track from her second studio album Revival (2015) features vocals by rapper ASAP Rocky. What boggles me though is how a torch song like this pop and R&B slow jam can actually get such high reviews when I personally think it sounds like a burn out. I often wonder how such insignificant tracks with redundant lyrics can make artists so popular, this one in particular being her highest debut on the US Billboard Top 100; but hey – that’s up to the public to decide! Or is it?
On the other hand, with R. City featuring Adam Levine’s catchy dancehall and reggae fusion Locked Away as second runner up, I wouldn’t be surprised if this charming remix will take that privileged position (I just love it!). There’s also Demi Lovato’s Cool For Summer at Number 3 trailing up for the hot spot so bottom line is: who’s to say that Gomez will continue her ride?
At Number 4 last week, we had English singer Ed Sheeran with another run-of the-mill acoustic ballad. Photograph which I find kinda too mushy however, had great reviews in Europe; but watch how this will plummet in this week’s countdown – that’s my take anyway!
A track that I think deserves recognition for its magnetism is Major Lazer & DJ Snake featuring MO’s Lean On which ranked at Number 5 last week after having reached the ultimate peak a few weeks back. A commercial success peaking at Number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at Number 2 on the UK Singles Chart, this EDM phenomenon continues to be a winner in spite of it being on its way out of Rick’s WT40 chart.
And of course, we have Justin Bieber soaring up the charts as well with what we already know will make it to the hottest seat. Incidentally, we all also know from my WT20 write ups that this is the song I’m not exactly fond of but read my lips… What Do You Mean? will make it to Number 1 – LOL!!!
