Top 10 Most Highly-Venomous Snakes in the WorldPDFPrintE-mail
Ignatius Oyama

Snakes can either be scary or they can be fascinating. Humans are naturally afraid of them for snakes’ ability to kill either by squeezing you to death (in the case of pythons and anacondas) or by biting you and injecting you with venom. This list concerns the snakes in the latter case:

1. Belcher’s Sea Snake – Reputedly the most venomous snake of all. Just a couple of milligrams of its venom can kill 1,000 humans. Ironically, this snake is rather docile and fishermen are its usual victims. Native to Southeast Asia and the northern part of Australia.

2. Black Mamba – Very aggressive and strikes precisely up to 12 times consecutively. Are known to chase down their victims at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour, making the black mamba the fastest land snake. One bite from the black mamba can kill from 10 to 25 adult humans. Found in many parts of Africa.

3. Blue or Malayan Krait – Even with antivenin application, half of all those bitten by the blue krait end up dead. They come out mostly at night and darkness makes them more aggressive as opposed to when in the light where they choose to hide than fight. Kraits kill and eat other species of snakes, even other kraits. Found in Southeast Asia.

4. Death Adder – Like the blue or Malayan krait, the death adder hunts down and eats other snakes. It has the fastest strike of all snakes – striking and getting back to striking position in 0.13 of a second. The death adder resembles the viper with its triangular heads and short body. Found in New Guinea and Australia.

5. Eastern Brown Snake – So venomous that a mere 1/14,000 of an ounce of its venom can kill a human being. It lives in areas that are also major population centers in Australia. It is fast and can be aggressive, chasing down its victims and biting them repeatedly.

6. Inland Taipan or Fierce Snake – It is the world’s most venomous land snake. Its maximum bite yield of 110 milligrams is enough to cause death to 100 human beings. But it is not very aggressive and humans rarely encounter it in its natural habitat n the wild. Native of Australia.

7. Philippine Cobra – The deadliest species of cobra. Can spit their venom at a distance of three meters. Its venom is a deadly neurotoxin that causes cardiac arrest and respiratory problems. A Philippine cobra victim can die in half an hour.

8. Rattlesnake – Belongs to the pit viper family. When striking can reach a distance of up to two-thirds of its body length. The juvenile rattlesnake is more dangerous than the adult since it cannot fully control yet the amount of venom it injects on its victim. Found widely in North America.

9. Taipan – One bite from a taipan can kill about 12,000 guinea pigs. Before an antivenin for its bite could be developed, no person has ever been known to survive its bite, usually dying in about one hour. Many similarities between the taipan and the black mamba have been noticed. Found in Australia.

10. Viper – Aggressive, fast, and usually active at night frequently after rains. Commonly found in many parts of the world with the chain and saw-scaled viper which are primarily found in the Middle East, China, India, and Southeast Asia as the most venomous.
