Just Plain Stupid...PDFPrintE-mail
Brad Burchards
One final round before we close off the Holy Week celebrations... or if we did already it doesn't really matter that much. As we all know we as well as tourists definitely love to explore new places, experience new things, and all that jazz simply because of the fact that we are a race that seeks further knowledge to put it lightly. But on most occasions, peoples stupidity does get in the way of the natural order of things which is yet again shown by two incidents which show how immature others can simply be. One is the so-called tactless approach a certain local individual had done when visiting the whale sharks on the Southern part of Cebu that has been covered by social media like it was the third coming of Christ! This person who probably knew what she had done was simply could not be considered as "fun" by more educated individuals showed off her prowess by standing on the back of one of the whale sharks, had a picture taken of it then posted it on Facebook...if the word "dumb" was something one could sprinkle on food, this girl had been receiving massive doses of it! Never taking into consideration that it was an endangered specie, her actions would definitely have corresponding reprisals, and lastly she should've done such a stunt on a much more hostile animal say a Great White Shark?

Luckily, through social media's help local authorities have started to move in on the issue by what most would consider illogical and with ill intent... bump up the fees for those who want to feast their eyes on such magnificent species. Chancing upon a news report the other day gave rise to the usual pros and cons of the decision saying it would hurt the local tourist industry as well as hurt the livelihood of those that have set up shop in the area. Others saw it as a welcome change but with a bit of hesitation owing it to the possible misuse of income generated. Yet again, we find action coming only after there has been damaging effect and not ensuring that it would not happen in the first place... what else is new?

Second act of immaturity involves more of insult and ignorance when a group of tourists this time with some locals had thought of a very new way in joining our Holy Week celebration. These revelers unfortunately did not partake in the usual "senaculo" by flagging themselves, acting out as probably the Roman guards or the "extras" but rather basked in a photo session by posing on the cross that was used to reenact Christ's death. From the pictures posted you'd actually think that the next series of shots would be the "models" undressing just like a Playboy photo session. Sadly, there were some locals involved as well which only goes to show that not all idiots that do crazy things are tourists... This hurts most of us being of a strict Catholic upbringing and being the only nation in Asia composed of mostly Catholics. If they were out to pretend to be Christ nailed on the cross they should've also subjected themselves to some flagging, crown of thorns to the head to at least make it real right? It sounds pretty sarcastic or sadistic but those of us who find it appalling have every right to wish them ill for the travesty that they have committed. If they are atheists by any chance then the best way they could have opted to do was jump off the hill and make sure not to call God for help when they can't stop rolling down breaking every bone in their body.

Two things that have made another dent to a perfect week has unfolded, I wonder what next week might bring as humans just can't stop making an ass out of themselves most of the time. Perhaps its time for some ethnic cleansing to hash out the bad apples in this huge basket of good ones.
