One actor that we've been missing on the big screen lately is Mark Wahlberg. I believe the last movie he made was The Fighter which was nominated for a good number of awards such as a Gold Globe for Best Actor and Screen Actors Guild Award to name a few.
Now, as we head on to 2012 we get a taste of the type of movies Mark Wahlberg is good at... action!
In the movie Contraband we it revolves around a story of a guy who has given up his successful life of being a smuggler. Movie starts with a ship being boarded by customs and two passengers frantically throwing a bag overboard before they are searched. As the movie unfolds Mark Walhberg (Chris Farrady) is with his wife Kate Beckinsale (Kate Farrady) at the wedding of their friend reliving the past glories they had as smugglers with Ben Foster (Sebastian Abney). After Kate receives a phone call from the hospital telling her that her younger brother (guy from the ship in the opening) races to the hospital only to find out that they had tried to smuggle in some drugs but were thwarted by customs therefore they had to dispose of it and ended up getting beaten up by Giovanni Ribisi's (Tim Briggs) henchmen.
With no other way in sight to resolve the situation amicably Mark Wahlberg then decides that the only way to repay the lost merchandise was to do a quick run to get the money to pay Giovanni Ribisi back for what he lost. Things are futher aggravated when Giovanni Ribisi had threatened to kill them all if he does not get his merchandise or money. Mark then gets on board a ship bound for Panama with the help of his jailed father rejoining his old crew planning to smuggle in "super notes" (fake money) back to pay off Giovanni. The perfect fool proof plan hits a couple of snags when a twist in the plot reveals who is really calling the shots, it is no other than Ben Foster who has incurred a huge debt with a local mobster to pay off for his extravagant lifestyle and had pressured Giovanni to take desperate action attacking Kate, ordering Kates brother to deviate from the original plan in Panama and procure drugs instead. With this Mark is left to deal with a local hoodlum by riding shotgun to a armored truck heist to pay the "super notes" he had intended to buy with the money that was instead bought for drugs. After a gunfight, death of the local hoodlum and safely back on board the ship Mark then has to plan bringing in the drugs as well.
Mark then finds out who was really calling the shots and after some well calculated moves he trumps Giovanni as well as his henchmen including the ship captain who was responsible for his father being in jail. His bestfriend Ben lands in jail after attempting to kill Kate and burying her under concrete. Mark then pays off the mobster with the "super notes" which he had thrown off the ship weighed down by bags of salt and the biggest pay off they had was the painting which was left in the van during the Panamanian armored truck heist.
Now I can't give you all the juicy details but it is enough to get you interested in the movie. If you ever plan to watch it then better get a good copy as most of the scenes are shot at night so bootleg copies are definitely an eyesore!
