In a completely understandable reaction, a South African woke up screaming Sunday when he discovered
he was lying in a refrigerated morgue surrounded by corpses. Sizwe Kupelo, a spokesman for the Eastern Cape Health Department, tells ABC News the unidentified 50-year-old man had lost consciousness after suffering an asthma attack over the weekend, and his family thought he had died. Kupelo says rather than call paramedics, the family called a private mortuary company to pick up the body, and the “dead man” spent the next 21 hours in a refrigerator while awaiting embalming.
Kupelo says the victim was discovered when two morgue attendants heard screaming coming from a corpse storage refrigerator and "ran for their lives," thinking it was a ghost. The attendants returned a short time later with other staffers and opened the refrigerator to find a confused, scared and shivering man. He was rushed to a local hospital and released six hours later after doctors gave him a clean bill of health.
