Gerard Butler has been undergoing treatment for substance abuse at the Betty Ford Center and is expected to be released Friday, TMZ.com reports.
According to the website, the actor began having problems in 2006 while coping with the physical demands of shooting his drama 300 in 2006. According to TMZ, Butler’s dependence on prescription drugs increased when he was injured in December in a surfing accident while filming Of Men and Mavericks. A source tells TMZ Butler realized he was relying too much on prescription pain medicine and decided to enter Betty Ford three weeks ago before his problem turned into a full-blown addiction. The source says Butler also had an issue with cocaine, but the main problem was pills and pain management.
