The Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) is an Islamic Militant Organization based in Mindanao, Philippines.

They are a smaller player in the overall Moro insurgency in the Philippines, and are mostly active in Maguindanao and other places in Central Mindanao. It is a breakaway group from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) founded by Ameril Umbra Katu.

Along with the MILF, on January 25, 2015, the BIFF was involved in the 2015 Mamasapano Clash, leading to the deaths of 44 members of SAF, 18 from MILF and 5 from the BIFF.

Unlike the MILF, the BIFF does not have an existing peace agreement or a cease-fire agreement with the government. The MILF has also denied coordinating with the BIFF, and the group acted on independently.

The Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) said that they will not return the weapons of the Philippine National Police Special Action Force (PNP SAF) troopers who were killed in Mamasapano, Maguindanao.

BIFF spokesman Azis Mama said the rebels earned the weapons after defeating the SAF combatants. “It will be hard to return the 10 recovered firearms because we didn't borrow them. Just like in boxing, the enemy was knocked down so we will not return the belt we obtained unless there's a rematch," Mama told radio dzMM in Filipino.

The BIFF continued to insult the Philippine Government and taunted government forces to ‘come and get them back if they can’. By the statements they made on the media, they have made it clear to the Filipinos that they are an enemy of the people.

In my opinion, the government of the Republic of the Philippines should always work for peace and give each citizen a chance of a better life, but at the same time uphold justice and never tolerate this kind of behavior from – not just the Muslims Rebels but from – anyone who dares to challenge it’s authority and it’s constitution. We cannot be a country dictated by a few who think they can terrorize us with words and a few firepower.

On February 25, 2015, the Armed Forces of the Philippines launched an all out offensive on the BIFF.  I am hoping that the Government remained committed to this offensive and finishes this once and for all.  It is important to stomp on a threat before it becomes a monster that will turn out to be harder to defeat.  We will have to sit back and watch if this administration has the guts to do it.
