Chia Seed food

They may be tiny but they pack a healthy punch!

If you haven't noticed already, Cebu has become more accepting towards food establishments and shops that promote healthier choices to incorporate into our diet. The downside is that the usual brands we come across say, at Healthy Options or at the Eco Store is that they are too expensive. However, a recent health trend comes in the form of Chia seeds. For every ounce, you can now enjoy a good dose of Fiber, Protein, Omega 3, Calcium, Manganese, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Zinc, Potassium and Vitamins B 1,2 and 3. Impressive, huh? You can find them at Healthy Options and SNR sold in large quantities (Php600-900/kg). Prices vary so ask your friends where you can get a pack or you can split with a friend!

Chia Seed food main

They work best when wet as these tiny seeds can expand to hold about 10 times their dry weight in liquid. When they absorb liquid, the seeds swell into gel-like globules reminiscent of miniature tapioca balls. Avoid taking them dry as this can irritate your throat. So here are some ideas on how you can incorporate them into your everyday meals and beverages!

Smoothies and Juices

Sprinkle a good amount on your drink and stir well. Let the seeds soak for atleast 15 minutes.

Oatmeal and Yogurt

Your favorite breakfast treats should pack a healthy punch! Add a tablespoon and mix well. I also like to make overnight oats so when I eat in the morning, both oats and chia seeds are well hydrated and have a nice bite into it.

Salsa and Salad

Since these seeds have a faint, buttery smell you can slip them into anything- having your fix of grilled meat and fish with a nice salad on the side with a good sprinkle of Chia seeds lend a healthy twist into a hearty meal.

Eggs

They complement a nicely-cooked omelette too! For sunny side-up or scrambled eggs, sprinkle them on top before they finish cooking.

Well, just about everything!
It's easy to slip these into everything like pasta sauces and dip so experiment and rest easy knowing you're giving your body a boost while treating yourself. Just consume food and drinks responsibly.
