John Lennon's application for permanent US residence was confiscated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) during a "raid" on a New York auction house 7 years ago today. Lennon’s 1976 immigration document, which included his signature and fingerprints, was expected to sell for at least $100,000 according to the dealer.

The prints were taken at a New York police station in 1976, when Lennon applied for permanent US residence. An FBI official told BBC News that they believed the card was government property and would be investigating how it ended up in private hands.

Peter Siegel, co-founder of the shop selling the fingerprint card, said he was bewildered by the FBI action and interest. "I don't know why it was so important that they had to have it back," Siegel told Entertainment Weekly. “This great icon has been deceased for 30 years,” he said. “This is not a national threat.”
