A tormented Mariah Carey once hired a private eye back in 2001 when she believed her ex-husband, music producer Tommy Mottola was trying to sabotage her career.
Top investigator Jack Palladino said the singer reportedly tried to kill herself and was convinced her record boss/ex-husband was spreading negative stories about her to the public.
The private eye said he was asked to check"all the bad press", and went around Sony headquarters to ask about Mottola after being tipped "he was conducting a smear campaign against Mariah Carey."
A source told Palladino that: "Mariah knows all too well that Tommy Mottola is the man who turned her into a worldwide star. Now, rightly or wrongly, she thinks he's the one who is trying to wreck her life." This of course, turns out to be false. Mottola even denies the claims completely, saying: "I am deeply saddened by Mariah's illness, and I remain completely supportive of her. Any allegations I have tried to hinder her career are completely untrue."
Mariah married Mottola back in 1993. They divorced five years later.
