Christopher Nolan’s World War II epic Dunkirk dominated both international and domestic marketplaces this weekend, with an overseas take of $55 million for distributor Warner Bros.

The film, which chronicles the evacuation of the British soldiers from the French seaport of Dunkirk as they battled the Nazis in 1940, opened in 46 international markets this weekend and was on Imax in 42 of those markets. The movie was screened on 10,775 theaters worldwide.

Meanwhile, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets bombed with only $17 million in three days (Note that the film is just beginning its international run and its budget was $209 million).

The film, which is based on the French sci fi adventure comic book series, “Valérian and Laureline” by Pierre Christin Jean-Claude Mézières, also failed to make critical acclaim. ‘Valerian’ got a 54% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while Dunkirk received universal praise with 92%
