Childhood friend says the trailer insults the talents of The Smith’s main songwriter and vocalist.

James Maker is a childhood friend of The Smiths’ main songwriter and vocalist Morrissey. He’s also a big fan of their music so he should be excited to see England is Mine, an upcoming biopic based on Morrissey’s early life. The movie will premiere on August 4.

However, when he saw the trailer to the movie for the first time this weekend, Maker found it “disingenuous” and “rather insulting”.

Maker – who danced onstage with The Smiths at their early gigs in the late 70’s before forming his own band– has issued a statement via Facebook (read below) in which he states the film: “is not a biopic, but historical fiction”.

Maker thinks the trailer portrays Morrissey as “an autistic, retiring creature with both curly hair and a natural crimp, who had to be physically pushed into becoming a singer by a well-meaning friend”, adding: “The premise that if Morrissey could be a singer, then anybody could, is disingenuous, and rather insulting to his original talent as an artist.”
