The MP3 has been officially discontinued

Is this the end of the MP3 audio file?

The developer of the MP3 audio format, which revolutionized the way people listen to music, announced Monday it has terminated the format’s licensing program after more than two decades.

Germany’s The Fraunhofer Institute developed the early digital audio format and licenses it to software developers around the world. As Gizmodo reports, the institute states that newer, MPEG codecs such as AAC files “can deliver more features and a higher audio quality at much lower bitrates compared to MP3.”

Gizmodo also reports that the mp3’s termination will have only minimal impact on the music and audio industries. They also said that “the audio quality is trash by modern standards and some research has even suggested that its compression reinforces perceived negative emotional characteristics in musical instruments to the detriment of positive emotional characteristics.” – in other words, research says that mp3 file formats make your music sound depressing.
