“Down”
Marian Hill

  • Lyrically, this song finds an initially reluctant Samantha Gongol’s encounter of love in the club.
  • She explains, "Down is the invitation, and you go through all kinds of different elements of young relationships, getting darker and darker and landing at the bottom with the song Same Thing [off the album], but then you hear the castanets and a look across a crowded bar changes everything.
  • The piano notes in the song were created accidentally. The producer of the song said, I tend to find it really hard to use piano in a cool way but I stumbled into Down while noodling around on the keyboard in the studio and Sam and I instantly fell in love with it.
  • The song first gained popularity in March 2016 when people heard it used in an Apple commercial.

“Passionfruit”
Drake

  • Over a gentle house beat and mellow vibes, Drake details his struggle to maintain a long-distance relationship in this WT20 debut song.
  • The passionfruit is a vine species of passionflower that is native to South America. It was so named by Spanish missionaries because they thought it symbolized the nails and thorns of the Crucifixion (or the Passion).
  • Though the song title does not feature in the lyrics, it does tie in with the alliteration that Drake uses in the chorus. “Passionate from miles away. Passive with the things you say Passin' up on my old ways.”

“Swalla”
Jason Derulo ft. Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla Sign

  • This Caribbean-driven track serves as the first single for Derulo’s upcoming new album. On the song, Derulo, Minaj, and Ty go back to their island roots and deliver a sexy pop/dancehall track. “You know we’re from the islands,” Derulo recently told Billboard. “We really took it there and it’s definitely a must-see.
  • "Swalla" is slang for "swallow."
  • In the song, DeRulo’s attention went to one particular girl who was doing the ”shimmy” – a dance which involves shaking the body in a sexual manner. “Shimmy shimmy yay, shimmy yay, shimmy ya” is a reference to a 1995 Wu-Tang Clan song.
