Reports have confirmed that production has started on all four upcoming Avatar sequels, with a combined budget of over $1 billion.

Back in 2009, James Cameron released the surprise hit movie Avatar. It took Cameron about ten years to finish the movie because the technology he needed for his vision wasn’t invented yet.

The long-awaited follow-ups to James Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi epic have been in the works for some time, with the director declaring his intention last year to make four sequels to the original film.

It was reported by Deadline that production of the film began this week in Manhattan Beach, California. The report also notes how the shoot will be the most expensive of its kind, even more so than when Peter Jackson shot three  Lord of the Rings movies together.

Now that it proved to be one of the greatest films ever made, Cameron is currently working on four follow-up sequels for Avatar, whose release dates have already been confirmed.

Avatar 2 will be released on December 18, 2020, followed by Avatar 3 on December 17, 2021, with the remaining two Avatar films released on December 20, 2024 and December 19, 2025.

The announcement was made on the Avatar Facebook page, which declared: “Great to be working with the best team in the business! Avatar takes flight as we begin concurrent production on four sequels.”
