Beauty and the Beast Box Office

Even China managed to make the Disney movie a success despite its gay moment kept in.

Disney's latest live-action adaptation of one of their classic films, Beauty and the Beast, opened with an estimated $170 million in North American ticket sales and setting a new high mark for family movies.

The film which stars Emma Watson as Belle, blew past the previous record-holder for G- or PG-rated releases, according to studio estimates Sunday. Last year, Disney's Finding Dory debuted with a then-PG-best $135 million.

In China, a country notorious for censoring unconventional elements in movies, left Beauty and the Beast untouched despite having a gay moment scene. It managed to open with an estimated $45 million in ticket sales in the country. It also pulled in $3.4 million from 386 Imax screens.

You can still catch Beauty and the Beast showing in cinemas around the city.
