Why did these celebrities leave social media?
You’ve got to admit. The internet is a horrible place. It’s full of trolls, bullies, and hurtful gossip. That’s why high-profile individuals avoid or quit social media completely.
Here are celebrities who couldn’t take mean tweets or petty criticism anymore and quit their online presence.
This actress temporarily left Twitter days after the release of her movie, Ghostbusters, following a particularly intense wave of racist abuse towards her.
As Jones tweeted image after image of the hateful things people were sending her way, Twitter eventually deleted several of the worst tweets Jones received and permanently banned some accounts.
Justin Bieber had around 80 million followers on Instagram when he temporarily deleted his account. The reason was because Bieber was involved with a public social media fight with ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez and a bunch of his own fans.
Last year, the gold medal winning gymnast seemed confused when a reporter at the Olympics started asking her questions about the Internet just after her final routine at Rio. The reporter wanted her to answer for a wave of petty criticism, much of it online, targeting Douglas' hair, facial expressions and hand gestures during the Games. She started to tear up as she gave her response. "I tried to stay off the internet, It was hurtful. It was hurtful. It was. It's been kind of a lot to deal with," she tearfully said.
In December 2015, Ed Sheeran announced that he was leaving social media for a year. He said “I’ve had such an amazing ride over the last five years but I find myself seeing the world through a screen and not my eyes so i’m taking this opportunity of me not having to be anywhere or do anything to travel the world and see everything I missed.”
In June 2016, Lovato decided to quit all social media apps, except Snapchat. She announced the news on her Twitter, writing: , “Damn, I gotta quit sayin [sic] s***. Bye Twitter” before continuing “And Insta” and finally saying “I like snapchat cause I don’t have to see what some of y’all say.”
