Russia to ban Beauty and the Beast

Vitaly Milonov says film’s release in Russia should be cancelled on basis that it promotes ‘perverted sexual relations

Russian officials are reportedly considering whether the country should ban the upcoming Disney live-action adaption of Beauty and the Beast, which Y101 will be giving away free tickets of for the special screening of the film on March 16 at the Robinsons Galleria Movieworld.

However, the release of Beauty and the Beast in Russia is currently in doubt as officials are investigating whether the content of the film violates the country’s 2013 law against “gay propaganda”.


Likely referring to the recently-announced news that the film will feature Disney’s first-ever openly gay character – director Bill Condon said one scene which features LeFou (played by) Josh Gad will be “a nice, exclusively gay moment” – one Russian MP branded it as “shameless propaganda of sin.

Russian culture minister Vladimir Medinsky also said that a decision on the movie’s release in Russia will be taken after it is formally checked by officials. Folks in Alabama, U.S.A. have also signed petitions to ban the movie in their state for the same reasons.
