The Teletubbies Had a Number One Hit

Could you imagine Y101 playing The Teletubbies sing Ba Ba Black Sheep on Friday Gold Rush?

It was a strange Christmas in 1997 when the children’s show characters The Teletubbies had a number one single for two weeks! Even odder is that it was even certified double-platinum!

The song charted for 29 weeks in the UK Singles Chart, climbing to number one in the weeks from December 7 to December 21, so basically the Christmas season in the United Kingdom.

There was considerable anticipation that it would be the Christmas number one in 1997. This race to be the Christmas number one hit was said to have been decided by the under-10 age group as the rival Spice Girls were popular with seven-year-old girls while the Teletubbies were more popular with younger children. But it was only beaten by sales.

Siobhan Ennis, singles manager at Tower Records said "The race for the Christmas No 1 is really exciting. At this time of year, people aren't being so serious about their purchasing. We've taken a hell of a lot of the Teletubbies record. The singles market is driven by children, and not just at Christmas."

Sadly, The Teletubbies were beaten by the Spice Girls' "Too Much" and so just became the Christmas number two. The outcome of this close race may be incorrectly recalled, however. For example, a year later, the BBC was embarrassed when its answer to a pop quiz had the Teletubbies as a Christmas number one.
