Gareth Edwards revealed about Star Wars: Rogue One

For starters, the film’s first draft supposed to have the iconic opening crawl.

Rogue One was filled with several notable moments that have left Star Wars fans with plenty to discuss, one of those was the epic appearance of Darth Vader.

The villain's presence in the film had been teased in the months prior to release and cinemagoers were treated with one of the best scenes in the saga, seeing Vader massacre several Rebel fighters with his lightsaber.

It turns out that director Gareth Edwards wasn't the only famous director on set during the shooting of that climactic scene. The set was blessed with the presence of this man:

Peter Jackson watched the Vader scene being filmed

Gareth Edwards revealed to Empire that they shot the Vader scene in Pinewood and he found out that Peter Jackson, the director of the Lord of the Rings series, was in town. Edwards sent him an email saying, “Peter, about to film Darth Vader if you want to come, it's happening now’, and Peter immediately responded “I'll be there in half an hour!’ Edwards said that Jackson perfectly timed it, he walked in literally for that shot where it goes from darkness to the lightsaber turning on.

Edwards also revealed that an opening crawl was originally in the first draft.

The first screenplay that Gary Whitta wrote had a crawl in it and Gareth Edwards as a Star Wars fan wanted to put it in. But according to the director, like six months before they filmed, they were in a meeting, and they talked about not having an opening crawl, because Rogue One was a standalone films, not part of the sagas. Edwards admitted that he was like, "whaaaa? I want the crawl!"

Edwards said that the opening sequence to Rogue One acts as the crawl to the movie. “It’s like the setup”. He also said that Rogue One was born out of a crawl – the reason it exists is because of a previous crawl, so it feels like this infinite loop that will never end. “It's a small thing to give up to get to do Star Wars”, Edwards admitted.

The famous transition ‘wipes’ exist in other cuts

In the editing aspect of Star Wars, a transitional wipe can be popularly found all around. Edwards revealed that they did have versions of the film [with] wipes, and then it just felt like they were doing it because they could. The wipes are the cheesiest thing in the world. The only time you can ever do it and not be cheesy is in Star Wars. Edwards admitted that there’s part of him that wanted the wipes and things like that, but the film is supposed to be different. They were given a license by the studio to be unique from the others, and they just took that license and ran with it as an excuse to try and be a bit more out there.
