Philippine’s hip-hop royalty from Cebu has blown up in 2016, making them Y101’s best local artist of the year.

MOBBSTARR, also popularly known as the rap act DiCE & K9 during the early 2000’s, came back with bang on this year’s local music scene.

After having enjoyed mainstream success with their song Itsumo back in 2002, rapper DiCE and his singer wife Hi-C made a make-over to the collective in 2016 and added new rapper Garvie Enage, who can spew out some sick rhymes as well.

With sounds influenced from diverse acts like Schoolboy Q and Francis Magalona, it’s no surprise that the collective would cross-over to other genres and explore what they can do. In 2016, producer DiCE put singer Hi-C in front of the act to do vocals on some new electronic sounds they’ve been working on for a long time.

With their new electronic sound, MOBBSTARR proved they can successfully cross over to a genre that they have been teasing for years in sweet songs like “Bestfriends” and “Eargasmic”. MOBBSTARR proved that they can still make interesting music well into the next decade marketed to a new generation of music listeners.

Y101 helped bring the act’s hit Itsumo into the mainstream and public consciousness back in 2002, so it’s best that we put them and their fresh hits back on the radio in 2016. MOBBSTARR is Y101’s best local artist of the year.
