Bastille’s ironically upbeat Good Grief is still on the top 5 in Y101’s Weekly Top 20. Find out things you need to know about this British indie pop band.

Chances are, you’ve probably heard a song or two by Bastille. Their big tunes “Pompeii” and “Of The Night” have been big radio hits over the past couple of years, and the band has gotten even bigger with their current hit Good Grief.

The band first got together in 2010, and originally had two other members who played violin and cello. Bastille is named after Bastille Day, the start of the French Revolution. Bastille Day is the same date as founder and lead vocalist Dan Smith’s birthday.

In 2013, they released a mash-up, featuring covers of 1993 Corona hit “The Rhythm Of The Night” and Snap!’s 1992 tune “Rhythm Is A Dancer”. The song was called “Of The Night” and charted at 2 in the UK. They really love to cover other artists, having covered the likes of Miley Cyrus, Frank Ocean, and TLC.

Bastille is really big into history. Having its named after a historical day, they also had several songs based on historical events. “Pompeii” is inspired by the Roman town engulfed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and “Icarus” plays on the character in Greek mythology who flew too close to the sun.

In short, they’re a pretty smart band.
