Classic 21st Century Christmas Songs

The 50’s gave us I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, the 80’s Last Christmas. What has the 21st century contributed to the canon of classic Christmas songs?

Christmas time is the only best time to play Christmas songs. Over the years, popular Christmas songs were released that have become classic and traditional in their own rights. The 50’s gave us Rockin Around the Christmas Tree, the 60’s It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, the 70s Happy Xmas (War is Over) by John Lennon, the 80’s Last Christmas and the 90s All I Want for Christmas is You.

And now since the 21st century has arrived, it may be too soon to pick out a classic. But here at Y101, we’ve got a good ear to spot the worth remembering.

Britney Spears My Only Wish this Year (2000)

Is it me or does this Christmas song perfectly capture Christmas of the Y2K era?

Toni Braxton Snowflakes of Love (2001)

If the 60s had the Shirelles and the Ronettes for R&B Christmas classics, the noughties brought us Toni Braxton and this sultry R&B Christmas classic.

Josh Groban Believe (2004)

This Christmas song sung by baritone vocalist Josh Groban was made for the 2004 motion-capture film The Polar Express. The song already sounds like a classic from the early 2000s.

The KillersDon’t Shoot Me Santa (2007)

The 20th century brought us odd but fun novelty Christmas jingles like I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus and Santa Baby. The 21st century brought us The Killers and this already classic Christmas song about psycho killer Santa Claus.

Coldplay Christmas Lights (2010)

This song has all the warmth and heart of a classic sentimental Christmas song, up par with the likes of Have Yourself a Merry Christmas and I’ll Be Home for Christmas all from the 40s.

Justin BieberMistletoe (2011)

Bieber’s rendition of Santa Claus is Coming to Town is also worth noting, but we’re going for an original composition written by Nasri, from the band MAGIC! who brought us the song Rude. ‘Mistletoe’ is noted for its reggae/christmas pop fusion.

Ariana Grande Santa Tell Me (2014)

It may be too soon to tell but Santa Tell Me has all the formula for a classic; strings, sleigh bells, a timely pop star, and relevant socio-cultural theme fit for the 21st century.
