political statement in ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”

A writer of the 'Star Wars' spin-off had drawn parallels between it and the US election.

Disney CEO Bob Iger has distanced Rogue One: A Star Wars Story from the current world politics following an online protest against the movie.

Protests against the most recent Star Wars flick has kicked off online just shortly before it was released. Members of alt-right groups and pro-Trump supporters wanted to boycott the film by going into Twitter with the hashtag #DumpStarWars. A Member criticised the movie for using a “multiculturalism anti-American agenda in a science fiction Disney movie”.

Alt-right protesters called for the boycott of the Star Wars spin-off because the story had parallels to the recent U.S. elections and the rise of Donald Trump. At least, there’ll be more spaces in the theaters without them.

Chris Weitz, a writer for the movie reacted to the tweets by writing: “Please note that the Empire is a white supremacist (human) organisation opposed by a multi-cultural group led by brave women.” That later provoked more alt-right members and Weitz later deleted the tweet and apologised for his comments.

The Hollywood Reporter asked Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney, about the situation at the film’s premiere last week. He responded: “I think the whole story has been overblown and, quite frankly, it’s silly.

I have no reaction to [this] story at all. Frankly, this is a film that the world should enjoy. It is not a film that is, in any way, a political film. There are no political statements in it, at all.

He continued: “[Rogue One] has one of the greatest and most diverse casts of any film we have ever made and we are very proud of that, and that is not a political statement, at all.
