World’s Oldest Living Person Turns 117

Having lived through three centuries, Emma Morano’s secret to longevity is a diet of two eggs and cookies a day.

Born on November 29, 1899, Emma is currently the world’s oldest living person and the last verified living person to have been born in the 1800s.

Emma currently lives alone in her home in Verbania, a town in northern Italy. Still alert and very chatty, she welcomes anyone who comes to visit her to ask about her long life. When asked about her secret to longevity, she said “I eat two eggs a day and that’s it. And cookies. But I do not eat much because I have no teeth.

She was the eldest in eight children – five sisters and three brothers. in 1937, at 38 years old, her only child was born but died when he was only six months old. She didn’t have a happy marriage and so she left her husband in 1938. She says she’s single since the 30’s and her being single is one of the many reasons for her longevity.

Now as the world’s last living link to the 19th century, Emma has become somewhat of a celebrity – she has her own Wikipedia entry - and her long life will be marked by a party and concert organised by the town she lives in.

Last July, she was presented with a certificate from Guinness World Records recognizing her as the oldest person alive.
