Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ was Recorded

The cream of the crop of British pop in the early 80’s gathered together to bring the world the Christmas anthem, Do They Know It’s Christmas?

In 1984, musicians Bob Geldof and Midge Ure wrote the song Do They Know It’s Christmas in reaction to television reports of the 1983–85 famine in Ethiopia. Geldof and Ure gathered the biggest British and Irish musical acts at the time and created the supergroup Band Aid to record the Christmas song. There were about 44 musicians who recorded the song in one day!

The musicians who appeared on the Christmas single included Bono of U2, Phil Collins, Bananarama, Spandau Ballet, Boy George, Paul McCartney, and George Michael.

20 years later, Band Aid 20 was formed. They rerecorded the song and this time included younger artists like Chris Martin of Coldplay, Sam Smith, One Direction, and Ellie Goulding.
