ariana grande artist of the week

This week Side to Side is Y101’s Weekly Top 20 number five hit!

This decade saw –or heard, the pop world has changed a vocal singing style. With the likes of Halsey, Lorde, and Bebe Rexha, pop singers today adapt to a vocal affectation that bends vowels previously heard on indie pop music.

So it seems like Ariana Grande is among the few pop singers left who still use the melismatic singing style of the 90s and 2000s often used by Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera.

Although vocally lower-key artists like Rihanna and Katy Perry are topping the charts now, Grande proves to be the spark trying to re-ignite the the power of the vocal abilities pop stars possess.

This week in the Weekly Top 20, Tinie Tempah and Zara Larsson's takes a hold on the top spot with their hip-house collab Girls Like. The two artists replaced Ariana Grande from the top who fell from the charts at number 5. In between them are Bruno Mars (24K Magic #4), Little Mix (Shout Out to My Ex #3), and Dawin (Jumpshot #2).

Check out the WT20, Saturdays, from 4-6 pm, only on Y101, the Rhythm of the City - Always First.
