Y101’s Song of the Month

Why Is The ChainsmokersCloser the biggest song in so many countries? Let’s find out as we break down Y101’s number one song in the month of September.

The Chainsmokers’ Closer came in like a tropical storm because it followed the duo’s established template. All three of their 2016 smashes have prominently showcased a brassy female vocalist. Roses was actually named after its singer, Philadelphia-based Elizabeth “Rozes” Mencel; and Don’t Let Me Down showcased Pittsburgh teenager Grace Martine Tandon, who goes by the name Daya. Each of these Chainsmokers hits was marked by lovelorn lyrics and accompanied by emotionally powerful female vocals.

But it was Closer that got the electronic New York natives to go number one in several charts. The song was released late July and in no time shot right up to the top.

Music analysts have even called it an instant classic, boasting an earworm chorus and evocative verses “that capture the millennial zeitgeist in brilliantly infectious fashion”.

Although the song’s not that innovative, it’s still a tasteful tweeD M track that you didn’t expect coming from the guys who made the tacky pop meme #Selfie two years ago.

Closer is so easily digestible that it’s sometimes mush. It has all the essential ingredients to become a radio hit: the bouncy, sun-kissed melody, the “live-laugh-love” lyrics, Halsey’s warbling croons. All that makes it a very memorable song of the decade.
