Cheap Thrills was written by Sia and was originally intended to be performed by Rihanna for her album 2016 album Anti. But Rih’s manager rejected it.

Rihanna’s manager instead chose a different song Sia wrote. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Sia revealed that Rih’s manager told her, “We want 'Diamonds.' We need soul. We want some music that has feeling.'

Sia decided to sing the song herself and included it in her album This is Acting, which has a chock full of rejected songs she wrote for other artists like Adele, Shakira and Beyonce.

Sia said that while cutting Cheap Thrills she realized that it sounded a little bit too Brit-Pop for Rihanna, likening it to a song by Icona Pop.

"For some reason, I really liked listening to it, which makes me feel masturbatory, but I wouldn't normally be just jamming out to my own tune. There's something really uplifting about it that put me in a good mood, and I would just pretend it wasn't me singing. It felt very summer and fun, and I was like, 'I'll put that on there.”

Adele also turned down two songs that Sia penned. One of which is Alive that Adele co-wrote, and the other one is Bird Set Free, which was also rejected by Rihanna.
