Jackie Chan to Receive Honorary Oscar

Jackie Chan awarded honorary Oscar

The actor will receive the award in November.

The 62-year old martial artist, actor, director, producer, and singer will receive an honorary Oscar this November at the Academy's Governors Awards, alongside film editor Anne V. Coates (Lawrence Of Arabia, 50 Shades Of Grey), casting director Lynn Stalmaster (Harold and Maude) and documentarian Frederick Wiseman.

The Hong-Kong actor has appeared (and directed) in several martial arts films. Western audience are more familiar with his Hollywood works like the Rush Hour series, The Karate Kid remake, Shanghai Knights, or The Tuxedo. Since the 1960’s, the actor has appeared in over 150 films, but has never received an Oscar nomination.

The Academy finally decided to honor him and said Chan has spent four decades "charming audiences with his dazzling athleticism, inventive stunt work and boundless charisma".

After hearing of the news, the actor posted on Facebook to thank his family and fans.

"I'd like to say a heartfelt thank you to the Oscars for giving me this award of encouragement and recognising my achievements while I'm still 'young'," he wrote.

"I'm absolutely honoured to be the first Chinese in history to receive this award. To be honest, making an action movie isn't easy. It's normal for us to get hurt and bleed. Many of us have sustained a body full of injuries and I'm no exception to the case.

"That's why I'd like to share this honour with my brothers of the JC Stunt Team who have been with me through good times and bad times over the many years, and I'd like to share this award with every action movie star from all over the world!"
