Madonna Louise Ciccone was born on August 16, 1958. She is of course better known as the supermega pop star who gained fame for performing the songs Like a Virgin, Like a Prayer, Express Yourself, and recently Bitch I’m Madonna which she collaborated with Nicki Minaj and Diplo.
Besides her amazing music career, Madonna’s popularity was further enhanced by her film roles, including Desperately Seeking Susan, Dick Tracy, and Evita. She won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for her role as Evita Peron in the musical drama Evita.
Her other ventures include fashion design, writing children's books, and filmmaking. She has been acclaimed as a businesswoman too, particularly after she founded entertainment company Maverick.
Having sold more than 300 million records worldwide, Madonna is recognized as the best-selling female recording artist of all time by Guinness World Records. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) listed her as the best-selling female rock artist of the 20th century. Madonna is the highest-grossing solo touring artist of all time, earning US $1.31 billion from her concerts since 1990. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in her first year of eligibility. She is also behind only to The Beatles on Billboard's list of Greatest Hot 100 Artists of All Time at number two.
Madonna is also known for her charity work. She participated in the Raising Malawi initiative by partially funding an orphanage and building a school in the country.
