Jared Leto's Joker Was Inspired By David Bowie

There has now been a handful of on-screen versions of The Joker since CesarRomano first portrayed him in the 1960’s Batman television series. We saw a crazy psychotic gangster in JackNicholson, a psychopathic schizophrenic clown in HeathLedger. Mark Hamill gave life to the character in the 1990’s Batman animated series, and Zach Galifianakis will try his take on a lego version coming soon in 2017’s Lego Batman movie.

The Joker’s different versions are iconic and special in its own. That’s why Jared Leto who portrayed the character in the DC film series’ Suicide Squad had his own unique take, and he revealed that his version was inspired by legendary musician David Bowie.

Speaking to NME, Leto said: "I spoke to a writer and we discussed David Bowie a bit, not necessarily the music of David, but his class, his elegance, his timelessness.

"I don't wanna say who the guy was, but he's a famous writer in the world of DC [Comics]. Bowie was definitely one of the people we spoke about."

He added: "I think David Bowie is probably an inspiration for almost anything you could do creatively."
