Flashback Fridays

Houses of the Holy is the fifth studio album by English rock band Led Zeppelin released on March 28, 1973. It is their first album composed of entirely original material, and represents a musical turning point for the band, who had begun to record songs with more layering and production techniques.

The album, which has been certified platinum eleven times and is considered one of the greatest albums of all time, was on both the US and UK album charts. The album spent a total of 39 weeks on the Billboard Top 40

Holy follows the same basic pattern as the previous album Led Zeppelin IV, but the approach in the 1973 album is looser and more relaxed. Jimmy Page's riffs rely on ringing, folky hooks as much as they do on thundering blues-rock, giving the album a lighter, more open atmosphere. The pseudo-reggae of D'Yer Mak'er and the affectionate James Brown send-up The Crunge contributed to the musical diversity of the album.

The album cover is also as popular. The artwork for Houses of the Holy was inspired by the ending of Arthur C. Clarke's novel Childhood's End. The cover is a collage of several photographs by Aubrey Powell who took the photos at the Giant's Causeway, Northern Ireland.
