Sometimes you just feel like getting a good burrito or a taco. Cebu has a lot of spots that serve those two dishes, but nowhere close to the actual thing.

They're usually just an interpretation. Drowning in frustration, the Y101FM web team set out to get a little piece of Mexico. The disappointment stops now.

La Lucha/ La Lagrima Taqueria is the Holy Grail of Mexican food in this city. Their carnitas alone have the potential to make grown men cry. The food is so vibrant and homey which makes it an instant mood-lifter. For someone who is obsessed with chilies, or anything spicy for that matter, unlike Bono, I think I've finally found what I'm looking for. Despite the insane (hot) weather we're experiencing, that seemed to be put aside and completely ignored when wolfing down these amazing dishes.

Flautas

These are rolled taquitos filled with beef or – in this case – chicken, topped with salsa, guacamole, sour cream and lettuce, with rice and beans on the side. A meal that could give you the same satisfaction you usually get when visiting your grandmother's house. You've got the citrus and the tang to cut off the rich and savory qualities of the meat and beans; a perfect balance. It's fulfilling and absolutely delectable.

Carnitas in a Soft Shell Taco

Beans, cheese, guacamole, sour cream, salsa and the best carnitas I've ever tasted stuffed inside the embrace of a soft shell taco. I honestly cannot stop talking about the carnitas. This braised pork is utterly divine. It makes you want to book a flight to Michoacán to personally shake the hands of the good souls who invented this immaculate dish. The meat was so tender and flavourful, it could honestly make a grown man sit down and reevaluate his life. Absolutely stunning! I think the only downside to this dish is there wasn't enough to make this selfish girl happy.

Tostadas

A crispy corn tortilla with refried beans, lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, sour cream, Mexican cheese and beef. I think this is the perfect afternoon snack. The vegetables are fresh, and the meat is absolutely delicious. It's a very refreshing meal and has the potential to kick-start your day. This is highly recommended to those who want to keep it light.

Torta

A hefty Mexican sandwich with fillings like lettuce, tomatoes, mayonnaise, beans and pollo (chicken breast). This is an excellent bite that's packed with flavour. You can never go wrong with a well-balanced sarnie.

Guacamole

I can't end this review without talking about my favourite avocado-based dip. Served with a basket of tortilla chips, this side dish makes you want to throw away the bag of Doritos you have stashed in your cupboard. The guac is fresh and flavourful, and the chips are lightly fried and can definitely stand on their own.

Their dishes are highly customizable. They have a wide selection of meat to gratify your gastronomical experience; from Carne Asada (steak), Carnitas (braised pork), Pollo (chicken breast), Pollo Asasdo (grilled chicken), Buche (pork stomach), Chille Verde (pork in Tamatillo sauce), Lengua (beef tongue), Al Pastor (marinated pork), to Chorizo (Mexican sausage). Oh, and always ask for the red sauce; request for an extra dose while you’re at it.

If you're not too busy, and are in the search for authentic Mexican food, head down to Mango Square and visit La Lucha / La Lagrima Taqueria.

Good news to Northerners, they'll be opening a branch in Banilad very soon.
