Miss Universe 2016’s hometown

Check out France’s most underrated major city.

The charm of the city of Lille is that, despite being the largest in northern France, it doesn’t behave like a grand French city like Paris or Nice. It is known to have a very large student population. It also has a strong industrial background, but, after some difficult years, it is now known throughout France for its handsome city center and its very active cultural life.

Lille features an array of architectural styles with various amounts of Flemish influence, including the use of brown and red brick. These architectural attributes, many uncommon in France, help make Lille a transition in France to neighboring country Belgium, as well as nearby Netherlands and England, where the presence of brick, as well as row houses or the terraced house is much more prominent.

Lille has recently been in the spotlight after Miss France Iris Mittenaere, a native of Lille, became Miss Universe 2016, crowned in Manila, Philippines. Mittenaere attended Lille 2 University of Health and Law, studying dentistry. She plans on becoming a dental surgeon after graduating.

As Miss Universe 2016, she will be advocating oral hygiene around the world. Isn’t that neat?
