We have been traumatized by storms and other natural calamities and we cannot do anything to stop them.

The best thing we can do right now is to prepare for it. After knowing that another storm is coming, I could not help but wonder if people are actually preparing for it.

We can not take anything lightly now. I remember how devastating Yolanda was and I saw some people who didn't take it too seriously. There were people at the edge of the sea watching the monstrous waves as shown on YouTube. People should have been far away from the sea in the first place.

In times like these, we should be scared and prepared. Being scared is actually a defense so that we could flee from something we do not feel safe with. We should always be prepared to. Because of these occurences, it will do well if we spread what we know to others. So here is Y101fm.com’s suggestion on how to prepare for a storm:

1. Food: Buy food which will keep you and your family for a few days or at least a week, including water. Consider canned goods and keep a can opener handy!

2. Pets: Store dry pet food and water for your pets which can provide them for some days to at least a week. For pets outdoors, do not leave them outside on a leash or inside a cage when there is a storm.

3. Health, Sanitation and Medication: Prepare your maintenance medicines good for at least a week and common medicines such as medicines for wounds (betadine), bandages and first aid kits. Prepare antibacterial soaps and shampoos too.

4. Flashlights and candles: Buy or find several flashlights with batteries, store up batteries or solar powered flash lights. Stock up candles, lighters and matches. Make sure they don’t get wet. You may want to charge extra batteries for your cell phones and laptops. Have a battery operated radio handy.

5. Evacuation Plan: If you think you might need to evacuate, make an evacuation plan and inform your friends and relatives. Tell them about your plan so they will know where to find you in case mobile phones won’t have signals and there won’t be internet connection. Leave them your contacts.

6. Keep Clean: Secure garbage so that they won’t fly around. If you have things that may be “flying” because of the storm such as potted plants, please do hide them in a safe place.

7. Secure Important Things: Keep your important documents and files in a safe place. Same thing goes with your jewelleries. Place them in waterproof bags.

8. Secure your Windows: If you think your windows are too weak, secure them with cardboards and duct tapes

9. Keep your Car Safe: Park your car inside the garage

10. Be ready with Rain Gear: Keep raincoats, boots and umbrellas handy

11. If you think you do not have a sturdy home, research and move to an evacuation centre.

When the storm arrives, stay in a part of your home where there are no windows. Keep the young and elderly safe at all times. Always be updated via radio.

Keep safe!
